Samuel Sia, Ph.D.
– Claros Founder and Chair of Scientific Advisory Board, is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Columbia University and a co-inventor of the Claros technology. At Columbia, Dr. Sia directs research involving three dimensional tissue engineering and the development of low-cost handheld devices for performing sophisticated medical tests on a small microchip. A major component of his work is the creation of appropriate technologies for use in the developing world, with a focus on medical diagnostics. George Whitesides, Ph.D.
– Founder, Dr. Whitesides was the Principal Investigator of the research that produced the Claros technology. Dr. Whitesides is a world leader in surface chemistry and drug design. He has received more than 25 professional recognitions and awards, including the 1998 National Medal of Science and the 2003 Kyoto Prize for Advanced Technology. Dr. Whitesides was a founder of several successful companies including GelTex Pharmaceuticals, Theravance, and Genzyme. Dr. Whitesides is also a member of several advisory panels including the National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, NASA, and the National Research Council. Dr. Whitesides is the author or co-author of more than 900 scientific publications. He received his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology in 1964 and was a faculty member at MIT from 1963 to 1982. Peter T. Scardino, M.D.
– Chairman, Department of Urology, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, trained in urology and oncology at Duke, the Massachusetts General Hospital, the National Cancer Institute and UCLA. For nearly 20 years he was a faculty member at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, where he was Chair of Urology and Distinguished Service Professor. Since 1998 he has been Chair of the Dept. of Urology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Head of the Prostate Cancer Program, and a Member of the Sloan-Kettering Institute. He leads a large multi-million dollar training and research program in urological cancers, supported by the NIH. Dr. Scardino has frequently been cited as one of the best doctors in America (Town and Country, New York magazine); often lectures around the world and is the author of over 300 scientific papers. He is an editor of the major textbook in his field (Comprehensive Textbook of Genitourinary Cancer), editor-in-chief of the journal, Nature Clinical Practice Urology, and author of Dr. Peter Scardino’s Prostate Book, Avery Press, 2005, a comprehensive guide to prostate cancer, prostatitis and prostate enlargement (BPH). Dr. Scardino received the Eugene Fuller Triennial Prostate Award from the American Urological Association, the Presidential Award from the American Foundation for Urologic Disease, and is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. He appears frequently on national television news (ABC, Today Show, and Charlie Rose) and his work has been featured in The New Yorker, the New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal.
Alan J. Wein, M.D.
– Chairman and Professor of Surgery, Department of Urology, University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, has been the Chief of Urology since 1981 at the UPENN. Dr. Wein completed his premedical education at Princeton University in 1962 and was graduated from the UPENN Medical School in 1966. He specializes in cancer of the bladder, kidney, testicles, and prostate, also focusing on incontinence, interstitial cystitis and prostate ablation. Dr. Wein was one of the founding members of the Society of Urologic Oncology and was elected to membership in the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Society of Surgical Oncology. He serves as co-chair on the International Consultation for both urinary incontinence and BPH. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Urodynamics Society, the F. Brantley Scott Award of the American Foundation for Urologic Diseases, and the High Hampton Young , Distinguished Service, and Distinguished Contribution Awards from the AUA. He is currently a specialty society representative to the Board of Governors and on the Advisory Council for Urology for the American College of Surgeons.
E. Darracott Vaughan, M.D.
– Chairman Emeritus, Department of Urology, Cornell University, was the past attending urologist-in-chief at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Additionally, he serves as attending surgeon, Department of Urology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He received his bachelor’s degree from Washington and Lee University and M.D. from the University of Virginia. Dr. Vaughan is President Emeritus of the American Foundation for Urologic Disease and previously served as co-chair of the Prostate Health Council, chair of the Research Committee of the AUA, deputy chair of the National Kidney and Urologic Disease Advisory Board, President of the American Board of Urology, President of the New York Section of the AUA, President of the AUA and is currently on the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia and serves on the National Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases Advisory Council of the NIH. He has received several prestigious awards in his field, serves in editorial roles with prominent medical journals, and is a member of numerous scientific societies.
Stephen P. Dretler, M.D.
– Director of Kidney Stone Center, Department of Urology, Massachusetts General Hospital, Clinical Professor of Surgery, Harvard Medical School, has been practicing urologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital since 1965 prior to which he conducted his internship at the University Hospitals of Cleveland and was a graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Dretler is a world-renowned thought-leader in the area of urology and kidney stone disease, of which he has over 75 publications and 25 book chapters. He is the recipient of numerous awards in his field including the AUA Clinical Research Award, New England Urological Association Clinical Research Award, and the Maimomdes Award. He has authored several patents on devices associated with stone disease and has consulted extensively with urological instrument design firms. Dr. Dretler is also a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
Georg Bartsch, M.D.
– Chairman and Professor, Department of Urology, Innsbruck Medical University, Austria, became the Chief of Urology in 1987 at Innsbruck Medical University. Prof. Dr. Bartsch completed his premedical education and also graduated from the School of Medicine at Innsbruck University. He has conducted extensive research throughout his career at Johns Hopkins University and Roswell Park Memorial Institute. With an expertise in urological oncology, he has received numerous awards in the field including the Hoechst-Stiftungs Award, C.E. Alken Award, European Association of Urology Award, Award of the Medical Chamber of Tyrol and Vorarlberg, Maximilian Nitze Prize of the German Association of Urology, Grobhadern Prize for Innovation in Urology, Heinrich Warner Prize, Reinhold Witzel Prize, French Association Award for Prostate Tumor Research and the Gunther Voges Prize. Prof. Dr. Bartsch is President of the European Association of Oncology and Endocrinology in Urology and Vice President of Clinical Affairs at the University of Innsbruck.
Robert Getzenberg, Ph.D.
– Director of Urological Research, Brady Urological Institute, Johns Hopkins University Hospital, is the Director of Research of the James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute and Professor of Urology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Getzenberg was recruited to direct the Research Laboratories from the University of Pittsburgh where he served as the Director of Urological Research of the Department of Urology and a Co-Director of the Prostate and Urologic Cancer Center of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, Professor of Urology, Pathology, and Pharmacology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is also the recipient of a number of awards including the 2000 University of Pittsburgh Chancellor's Distinguished Research Award and was selected as one of the "40 under 40" by Pittsburgh Magazine. Dr. Getzenberg is the recipient of a number of grants from the National Institutes of Health and other agencies and foundations. He serves on the Board of Directors of the American Foundation of Urologic Diseases (AFUD) and has served in leadership positions in the Society for Basic Urologic Research. Dr. Getzenberg has authored a large number of manuscripts and book chapters in the field. Dr. Getzenberg received his Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1992. Dr. Getzenberg then completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Yale University School of Medicine.
